Rebecca Bloomfield is the
protagonist of the novel, “Confessions of a Shopaholic,” by Sophie Kinsella.
Throughout the book, Becky has difficulties controlling her money. She has a
highly addictive personality and can be irresponsible at times. She shows she has
an addictive personality as she
has an obvious addiction to shopping, “There is no question. I have to have
this scarf. Have to have it. It makes my eyes look bigger; it makes my haircut
look more expensive, it makes me look like a different person. I’ll be able to
wear it with everything. People will refer to me as the Girl in the Denny and
George Scarf.” (Page 14). Becky shows her irresponsibility by always
coming up with an excuse why the money hasn’t come in. A note from an accounts
manager, “Unfortunately although this check is signed, it appears to be dated
13 February 2200. No doubt it was just an oversight on your part.” (Page 119).
She usually refers to the items she bought as investments or claims they are
Christmas or birthday gifts for someone. She refuses to meet with her bank manager, Derek Smeath, and
chooses not to read his letters that shows his concern. This is a great example
of her irresponsible shopping habits, “As I finger a lovely white waffle robe,
I can hear a little voice at the back of my head, like a radio turned down low.
Don’t do it. You’re in debt. Don’t do it. You’re in debt. But quite frankly,
what does it matter now? It’s too late to make any difference. I’m already in
debt; I might as well be more in debt.” (Page 210). In conclusion, Rebecca shops
too much. Meanwhile, her debt is piling up to the point where she can no longer
afford her payments. She can always find reasons why she could spend more.
Although she might be an irresponsible person, she is still an optimistic and
generous person who would always buy things for her friends.
